Discount stacking gone wrong... good way to annoy me.

Discount stacking gone wrong... good way to annoy me.

Yesterday I had an item sitting in my cart on a Shopify site currently running a 30% sitewide sale.

Then I get a “your cart misses you” email today dangling 20% off.

- Of course, I try the code.
- Of course, it doesn’t work.
- I wasn't expecting a further 20%
- But even the error message was badly done.

Of course I get why this happens... different campaigns, overlapping automations, internal silos. But as a customer it’s irritating. I live and breathe this stuff daily, and even I felt that flash of frustration.

Imagine how the average customer feels.
It's not hard to pause the cart recovery offer or tweak the email copy during a sitewide promotion? Basic stuff really.

These small mismatches chip away at trust and conversions. It adds friction. and yeah it got me back on the site but only to annoy me.

Anyone else run into this? Do you think brands underestimate how much these “almost wins” sour the experience?
